VISA Requirements and Regulations

To participate in the CCUSA Work Experience USA program, you need a J-1 visa. CCUSA is here to assist you through the entire process from applying for, to receiving this visa. Below is some basic information on the J-1 visa. If you require more information, please contact your local CCUSA office.

The J-1 Visa

  • Your J-1 summer work/travel visa will be sponsored by Camp Counselors USA/Work Experience USA.
  • Once you apply and pay your fees, we will issue a DS-2019 form, which will allow you to apply for the J-1 visa at your local US Consulate or Embassy.
  • To be eligible for this visa, you must be a full-time university student between the ages of 18 and 29. You must be returning to full-time study at the conclusion of your visa.
  • The J-1 visa allows you to work for a maximum of four months with a one-month grace period allocated for travel. The dates you are eligible to work are on your DS2019 form and may be less than 4 months. Your visa dates will be based on the length of your vacation break from university. At the end of your J1 visa dates, you are allowed a 30-day grace period. The State Department specifically says that the 30-day grace period is intended for travel and preparation for departure AFTER your program - not before. You may not work during this 30-day grace period, and you must leave the U.S. and return home by the end of the grace period.
  • Please be aware that you are not legal to work in the following positions on this visa: as domestic employees in United States households (including as a nanny), as a camp counselor, or in positions that require you to invest your own monies to provide yourself with inventory for the purpose of door-to-door sales. You are also not eligible to work in jobs that require licensing under US law (such as doctors, nurses, lawyers, etc.) or in the adult entertainment industry.
  • To obtain the J-1 visa, you must have a face-to-face interview with your local US Consulate or Embassy. CCUSA will advise and assist you will all the documents that are required and with booking the interview.
  • You will be required to pay a Visa Application Fee at the time of your interview at your local US Consulate or Embassy. Contact your local CCUSA office for the cost in your local currency.
  • An additional fee is charged by the US government for all J-1 visas and is called a SEVIS fee. You must pay this fee prior to the interview. Your local CCUSA office will have the full instructions on how to do this. You cannot attend the interview until you have proof that this fee has been paid.
  • The J-1 visa cannot be extended, (no exceptions). The J-1 visa is designed to allow international students to work and travel in the USA for a specific, non-extendable length of time. As a J-1 visa participant, you are expected to return home to share your knowledge of American culture with friends and family members in your home country. Likewise, you should try to share your culture with Americans. By sharing your culture, you are educating Americans about different areas of the world and broadening their overall knowledge regarding places and people different from themselves. Be aware of this responsibility at all times.
